Paper submissions are invited for the next international symposium on friction stir welding (FSW), which takes place on 26-28 June 2018 in Canada.

Papers are expected to describe new developments in science, technology, applications, industrialisation, performance, quality, design or any other topic relevant to the advancement of FSW. This can also include progress at an incremental level as well as more spectacular advances.

Extended abstracts of ~500 words are due by the submission deadline of 30 November 2017.

Authors will be expected to attend the event and present their papers themselves. The author who will present the paper at the Symposium should be clearly indicated. Each leading author may submit no more than three abstracts.

A full guide on paper submissions is available on the symposium website but key points for authors to include are:

  • the full title of the paper, names, affiliations, email addresses and mailing addresses of the authors, and requested presentation method – either oral or post – must be shown
  • all papers must be in English, the official language of the symposium
  • the abstract must present background, objectives, methodology and results on a sound basis (innovative case studies, research data, practical experiences, investigations, etc).

The criteria for papers include:

  • evidence of progress in some aspect of FSW or related technologies
  • relevance to industry or academia
  • mostly unpublished work

Authors will be told by 8 January 2018 whether their submissions are successful, with papers required no later than 18 May 2018.

To submit your abstract please click here

Delegates from countries that require a visa to enter Canada are reminded that obtaining a visa can take up to three months. You are strongly encouraged to begin the application process early. The Symposium Organising Committee will assist in providing an official visa invitation letter for this conference. Details will be posted on the symposium website shortly.

International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding

The 12th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding (12ISFSW) is a unique global forum that provides a platform for international engineering professionals to network, present research, and share industrial applications and innovations in the field of FSW, and offers delegates an unrivalled opportunity to meet world-leading authorities on FSW including, researchers, practitioners, customers and suppliers.

The event will include three days of technical presentations, with opportunities to network and socialise on an evening cruise along one of the longest fjords in the world. The event is supported by the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, who are keen to welcome delegates to a beautiful and unforgettable location.

The event also includes an industrial visit organised by our supporters on 29 June.

FSW was invented by TWI in 1991. The company has since made major advancements in the technology, and continues to make significant developments.
