Professional development involves taking responsibility for your own life-long learning and aims to support your continuous improvement and growth to benefit yourself and your employer by broadening your knowledge and skills set.
Professional Development can be divided into:
- Initial Professional Development (IPD) refers to aspiring professionals learning to apply their knowledge and understanding, and developing their skills and competence all whilst also beginning to apply professional judgement. As a result of this, they are able to demonstrate the required competence and commitment to becoming professionally qualified with the Engineering Council.
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the process of collating your professional and academic experience to enable you to demonstrate, manage, and evaluate your own learning and growth.
Both forms of professional development great stepping-stones to progressing your professional career whilst also demonstrating your willingness to increase your skills knowledge and practical learning to clients, fellow colleagues and employees/employers alike. The Welding Institute encourages all Members to take a structured approach to professional development and is also a mandatory requirement for Members professionally registered with the Engineering Council.
