Considering the wide range of assemblies that go together to make a vehicle, from seat assemblies to power transmission, it is not surprising that a wide range of fabrication technologies are required. Materials are equally varied, including steel, aluminium, plastics, rubbers, composites, ceramics and a variety of fabrics.
Fabrication technologies include:
- Spot welding - including process development for higher strength steels
- Laser welding
- Adhesives - complete adhesive solution for aluminium chassis assembly
- Electron beam welding - of particular benefit to certain high performance motorsport components
The pressure to control production costs typically includes reducing reject rates, reducing raw material costs, considering alternative part materials and designs. TWI's input to these challenges ranges from on-site process evaluation to detailed assessment of parts design and process modification and the subsequent effect on reliability and production.
The breadth and depth of TWI's expertise in these areas makes it well placed to offer independent, authoritative advice. This may be advice at the early concept stage or production of prototype components that the manufacturer can test. Once the approach has been agreed, TWI can work with the manufacturer to ensure that the shop floor processes are robust and fully capable of delivering the required specification.
