A recent research paper co-authored by TWI finite element analyst, Longjie Wang, in collaboration with Bingchuan Yan (PipeChina North Pipeline Company), Guiyi Wu (Centre of Excellence for Advanced Materials) and Yanhui Zhang (PipeChina Science and Technology Institute) has just been published. The paper is now available to read in full online in the International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping (IJPVP).
The paper focuses on the strain-based fracture assessment of pipeline girth welds in accordance with DNVGL-RP-F108. The study determined the flaw tolerances of the girth welds of an onshore X70 spiral welded pipeline. The study also investigated the effects of factors including weld strength mismatch, parent pipe tensile curves, internal pressure, fracture toughness, residual stresses and misalignment. Finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to verify the accuracy of the methods in DNVGL-RP-F108 and valuable insights were provided.
