The National Structural Integrity Research Centre, alongside it's founding partners at LLoyd's Register Foundation (LRF), TWI Ltd and bp, have created a PhD within industry.

NSIRC is the only centre for postgraduate research into structural integrity engineering in the world. Our unique industrial doctoral programme, is designed to produce a future generation of highly skilled engineers, with an in-depth knowledge of the science and technology of structural integrity linked to industry needs.

Students conduct their research and doctoral training in an industrial environment at TWI Cambridge, a leading centre of engineering research. This mean that they will receive expert input from NSIRC's industrial partners (TWI, LRF and bp), and be fully equipped with the skills and knowledge required for their future careers.

Course content

During this three year industrial PhD programme, students will spend much of their time in the state-of-the-art laboratories at TWI near Cambridge. They will design and carry out cutting edge experiments guided by supervisors from TWI, their sponsor and their university. NSIRC is affiliated with over 30 leading universities in the UK and across the globe, including the University of Cambridge, home of the Cambridge department of Engineering, the University of Manchester, Singapore, Lancaster, and our lead academic partner Brunel University London.

Opportunities are also provided to publish journal articles, present at international conferences and attend courses to support personal development.

This PhD in Structural Integrity will provide the required advanced theoretical knowledge, and essential practical skills, for graduates to contribute to the field of structural integrity through the development of new concepts and methods.

The program best matches the career ambitions of those who wish work within the oil and gas industry, power generation, petrochemical, nuclear and transportation sectors.

The degree will provide the platform for rewarding careers in which to ensure structures and truly good design is paramount.

Duration, Fees and PhD funding

A number of fully funded PhD scholarships are available for suitable candidates with a strong interest in fundamental and applied research in the area of structural integrity. Lloyd's register Foundation funding and TWI CRP

For home students, a £24k per annum scholarship is available which will cover tuition fees and provide a competitive enhanced stipend of £16-20kper annum for the duration of three years.

Partial scholarships are provided for international students with funding up to £24k per annum for three years.

Scholarships will be considered as part of the PhD application process - there is no need to apply separately.

Entry Requirements

The programme is designed for mechanical, chemical and structural engineering graduates, those with degrees in materials science, metallurgy or physics, and experienced engineers in developing materials and structures.

Applicants should have at least a 2:2 degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant engineering subject, or significant extensive work experience to a similar level.

Overseas applications should have the minimum level of English language qualification:

  • IELTS min 6.5 for PhD
  • TOEFL paper test: 550 (TWE 4)
  • TOEFL internet test: 79
  • (R18, L17, S20, W17)
  • Pearson: 51 (51 in all subscores)
  • BrunELT: 60% (min 55% in all areas)
