A Structural Intregrity and Asset Reliability Management MSc based in Cambridge

NSIRC and Brunel University London have designed this world class MSc degree to support development of the next generation of structural integrity and reliability engineers.

Delivered at TWI in Cambridge, the home of NSIRC, this engineering course aims to develop MSc students into a highly sought after engineers.

The programme gives participants an in-depth knowledge in the theory, and the science and technology practice involved with structural integrity.

Thanks to Brunel University London this industry-led masters programme is producing the highly skilled engineers that global energy organisations are calling for,  with structural integrity engineers capable to meeting rapidly changing demands of technology innovation and production needs.

Brunel’s Structural Integrity (Asset Reliability Management) MSc degree is accredited by:

  • The Welding Institute
  • The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
  • The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)
  • NAFEMS Composite Finite Element Analysis training

This degree has been accredited by The Welding Institute, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3) etc) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Structural Integrity programme overview

The programme combines acclaimed academic and industry experts that assist and support your dissertation research. Taking place at TWI on Granta Park, Cambridge, the home of NSIRC and The Welding Institute.

NSIRC is a unique industrial Masters and PhD engineering facility founded by structural integrity authority TWI, with Brunel University London as the lead academic partner. NSIRC is sponsored by BP, Lloyd's Register and TWI, who support research and understand the global need for developments in safety for the structural integrity field.

This master degree is designed to advance your skills and knowledge, creating a highly-skilled engineer, trained within Industry.  Graduates will gain a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice, innovation and technology involved in structural integrity.

Comprising of eight modules and an industry-supported dissertation, the course has been designed for full or part-time students, as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) delegates.

In parallel with your degree, you can work towards the internationally recognised Certification Scheme for Welding Inspection Personnel (CSWIP) Plant Inspector Level 2 qualification.

The focus of this MSc programme

This masters degree examines detecting and dealing with defects in structures in order to prevent catastrophic failure. It also focuses on how to assess the implications of a particular defect.

Students will gain a sound understanding of stress analysis, how a structure carries loads, and different aspects relating to damage detection.

Access to £15m of equipment facilities

Dedicated teaching spacesIn addition to access to £15m of research specialised equipment through TWI Innovation Network, students will enjoy:

  • On‑site high performance computing facility to run complex numerical simulation to support their experimental work
  • Sports facilities
  • Access to all buildings at Brunel University London campus connected with the course

A network environment and collaborative ethos

Being based with industry gives mechanical engineering degrees an excellent opportunity to flourish.

With MSc students working together on applied research for real engineering projects, the learning experience is greatly enhanced.

This course can be studied either full-time over one year, or part-time over two years. Generous scholarships are available for Home, EU and Overseas fee paying students.
