Aamir Khalid

Aamir Khalid
Chief Executive Officer

Aamir has worked at TWI for the past 20 years. Aamir obtained an Applied Physics degree from University College London, a Masters and PhD in NDT from Brunel and Cranfield Universities and later an MBA from London South Bank University. He spent several years in industry before joining TWI as NDT section manager, specialising in applying robotics to non-destructive testing. From here, he progressed to lead the company’s non-destructive testing technology group in 2004 and became TWI Technology Director in 2010.

In 2012 he launched the Structural Integrity Research Foundation (SIRF), a knowledge transfer platform for technical excellence in structural integrity, alongside BP and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Through SIRF he has been able to deliver the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) with its aims of generating research outcomes to meet Member needs and at the same time placing 550 workplace experienced postgraduate students into industry. His work to create TWI’s Innovation Network has resulted in ten Innovation Centre partnerships, 24 Accelerated Innovation Programmes and four Private Technology Innovation Partnerships.

Outside TWI, Aamir has been the Chair and is currently still a member of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Business Board. He is also a former Director of the Manufacturing Technology Centre (part of the government’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult), and is currently an Associate Professor at Brunel University London.

Aamir became the Chief Executive of TWI in February 2019.

John Hill

Director of Technology 

John spent the first decade of his forty year career in manufacturing, starting as an apprentice and becoming a Chartered Production Engineer, specialising in polymers, composites and adhesives.

In the late 1980s, he moved into manufacturing research, training and consulting, joining a similar membership-based organisation to TWI called PERA (The Production Engineering Research Association). Over a 28 year career with PERA, he rose from Consultant to Section Leader, Director of Technology, CEO and finally Chair, representing the UK RTO sector on the Board of EARTO and becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

In 2016, he moved into Whitehall to better influence the Government’s industrial strategy, and learn first-hand how the machinery of government works. There, he spent time as a Director in the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (then BIS) and the Department for International Trade (DIT). More recently, he transferred into one of the devolved Mayoral Combined Authorities, to understand better how manufacturing innovation and skills are implemented locally. There, he performed a business turnaround of a former Local Enterprise Partnership, merged into the Combined Authority, transforming it from the poorest performing UK LEP to the highest, creating 20,000 jobs and establishing a University in Peterborough.

Leonie Stewart
Director of Finance

Leonie Stewart is responsible for TWI’s financial reporting, managing liquidity, budgeting and capital expenditure. In addition, she manages statutory filings for the company, undertakes auditing and review processes and provides support with international taxation and financial legislation.

Leonie is the line manager for the global finance team, UK purchasing and stores as well TWI Certification Ltd. She plays an instrumental role in helping to shape the global business and effectively managing the finance team as well as evolving the current finance capabilities, processes and systems to allow scalability as the business grows. Leonie provides timely, accurate and insightful information to support decision making, improve business performance and support growth, maintaining a commitment to financial rigour and strong corporate governance.

 

Paul Woollin

Paul Woollin
Director of Research

Paul joined the Materials Department at TWI in 1992, earlier graduating and gaining a doctorate from the University of Cambridge. He specialises in the metallurgy, weldability and weld properties of stainless steels and nickel alloys. In 2000, he became Head of the Materials Department and was appointed Director of Research in 2010.

Shahid Aslam

Director of Legal, Governance and Compliance 

Shahid joined TWI as the Director of Legal, Governance and Compliance in February 2020, having previously worked as an external solicitor on several high priority and complex matters. With over 30 years’ experience in the legal profession, he has an LLB (Hons) degree from University College London, Solicitors Finals from the College of Law and a Masters level qualification in Media Law from UCL. Shahid is a qualified Civil and Commercial Mediator and a fully qualified solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales and a Commissioner for Oaths.  Shahid has also served as a local Councillor for the Borough of Gravesham as well as having been the Secretary of Gravesend and Dartford Muslim Association (2002-2003) a registered charity, during which time he took a leading role in developing strong community relations and updating the governance structure.

 

  

Shervin Maleki
Director of Global Development

Shervin joined TWI in 2006 and worked for seven years as the Associate Director in Global Training and Technical Services, as well as the Group Manager in Asset and Fracture Integrity Management. With expertise in risk and reliability engineering, risk assessment, risk-based inspection, and fitness-for-service, Shervin was appointed to the position of Global Development Director in 2019.

 

 

Tat-Hean Gan

Director of Membership and Innovation

Tat-Hean joined TWI in 2006 after graduating with a first-class honours degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Nottingham before pursuing an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering, his PhD in Engineering from Warwick University and his Executive MBA degree from the University of Birmingham. Tat-Hean’s areas of expertise include non-destructive testing, signal processing and imaging techniques, structural and condition monitoring, technology transfer and exploitation, business and technology development, IP and patents, project management, collaborative programmes, public funding, international business and recruitment for engineering services. Tat-Hean was appointed the Innovation and Skills Director in 2019. He is also the Director of the Brunel Innovation Centre (BIC) and the Director of the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC), the UK's first industry-led postgraduate education and research centre in structural integrity, which is based at TWI.

Elizabeth Andrews
Associate Director – People and Culture

Elizabeth is a CIPD qualified HR professional. She has been working within in the Human Resources field for the past 17 years across a number of industry sectors. She truly believes a company is only as great as the people who embody the organisation. Human resources is about creating an inclusive culture, developing skills and providing opportunities for all. Elizabeth heads up TWI’s Global People and Culture team. The aim of the Group is to support our people to be the best they can be and to deliver the best possible solutions to our customers. That means there is a focus on training and development - recruiting and retaining highly skilled people around the globe; creating career and reward structures that engage our talented people; promoting TWI Values, and promoting a culture of inclusion.

 

Warren

Warren Bath

Associate Director of Operations

Warren started his career in the automotive sector, working as a Service Technician for the Volkswagen Group. He went on to complete a BEng in Motorsport Engineering, which led him to working in Monaco for SBM Offshore within the R&D department. SBM Offshore were members of TWI, which is where he was introduced to TWI’s technical excellence. He subsequently joined TWI in the Technology Groups, working in the Numerical Modelling Department and was sponsored by TWI to complete an MSc in Structural Integrity through the NSIRC programme. After completing his Master’s he spent three years in business development before moving directly under the Director of Technology at the time to support in strategic operational initiatives. Since 2019, he has reported directly to the CEO and is now the Associate Director of Operations, accountable for Technology Group operations, Information Technology (IT), The Test House (a Group Subsidiary), facilities, hospitality and a £200m operational and investment property portfolio.

 Laura Murfin C Eng BEng MWeldI

Associate Director, Head, Legal Affairs

Laura joined TWI in 1999, in the same year that TWI Limited was formed, after graduating with first class honours in engineering and working for a number of years in mechanical and civil design engineering. She is a Chartered Engineer and has recently completed her Law Foundation certificate. Laura initially joined the commercial team at the Institute and then moved into innovation and IP becoming a senior project leader in the newly formed IP team and subsequently IP Manger before moving into the a role overseeing governance and the Institute’s property portfolio. Since 2020 she has reported to Director, Legal Affairs and is Head of Legal Affairs managing a small diverse international team with responsibility across commercial, governance, property and intellectual property. Supporting the Council and Executive Board, Laura is responsible for identifying and managing legal risk within TWI. Core responsibilities include the development and embedding of robust governance systems and process across TWI’s business and support and advice on legal matters concerning TWI’s corporate business. In 2021 she was made Associate Director and in 2022 gained a dual reporting line to the Director, Research.

 

Heather

Heather Claxton

Associate Director – Research and Innovation Global Operations

Heather holds a First Class BSc (Hons) in Management and is a Chartered Manager (Fellow) of the Chartered Management Institute (CMgr FCMI).  In her current role as Associate Director, Heather is responsible for the global operations of TWI’s Membership and Innovation Directorate, and the TWI Innovation Network including the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC), as well as the operations of the organisation’s flagship Core Research Programme.  Her remit includes strategy formulation, programme management, process and systems review, budgeting, personnel management and stakeholder relations.  Particular areas of expertise include the streamlining of organisational processes and implementation of cost-effective solutions, establishing and developing new strategic partnerships and networks to facilitate research and development opportunities, and creation of novel business models in line with corporate planning.

Prior to her current role and responsibilities at TWI, Heather has held the positions of Research and Innovation Operations Group Manager, and Operations Section Manager, and formerly Team Manager, for NSIRC and TWI Innovation Centres.  Having originally joined TWI in 2006 as an Administrator, Heather went on to achieve a number of promotions across administrational and commercial roles, before progressing to her current position of Associate Director.
