The European Commission has launched a €1 billion call for research and innovation projects that will tackle the climate crisis and serve to protect Europe’s ecosystems and biodiversity.
Funded by Horizon 2020, the European Green Deal Call aims to use innovative ideas to respond to green challenges while also spurring on Europe’s recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
With national governments across Europe calling for action, this call is the largest put forward by Horizon 2020 to create a climate and carbon neutral Europe by 2050.
With factors such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, energy transition through moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy, advancing electric vehicles, and reducing global temperatures being among the challenges, this call is seeking urgent results to be realised in the short to medium-term, with a perspective on long-term changes.

This call highlights a need for international cooperation to address the needs of less developed nations, particularly in Africa, under the context of the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Creating a Better Future
Through factors such as lowering carbon emissions, the European Green Deal is a roadmap to making Europe the first climate neutral continent by 2050, with a sustainable and inclusive economy.
To reach this goal there is a drive to:
- invest in environmentally-friendly technologies
- support innovation in industry
- deliver cleaner, cheaper and healthier transport solutions
- decarbonise the energy sector
- make buildings more energy efficient
- improve global environmental standards
Through these drives, the Green Deal Call is working towards an overall focus area of ‘building a low-carbon, climate resilient future.’
Project Summaries
The call has been split into projects covering eight thematic areas along with two horizontal areas that work across these eight themes, as detailed below:
Area 1: Increasing climate ambition: cross sectoral challenges
This area includes preventing and fighting wildfires as well as demonstrating innovative means towards climate-neutral and socially innovative cities. This area also includes climate-resilient innovation packages for EU regions.
Area 2: Clean, affordable and secure energy
Area 2 seeks to develop technologies to enable the deployment of large-scale offshore renewable energy assets as part of an integrated energy system. Renewable resource links to industry will be upscaled through the development of a 100 MW electrolyser. This area also includes international cooperation to accelerate the green transition and energy access in Africa, something that TWI has already been involved in.
Area 3: Industry for a clean and circular economy
This area of work seeks to combat climate change by closing the industrial carbon cycle while also demonstrating solutions for the territorial deployment of the circular economy
Area 4: Energy and resource efficient buildings
This area aims to provide energy and resource efficient solutions for building and renovation.
Area 5: Sustainable and smart mobility
Area 5 concerns the development of green airports and ports as multimodal hubs for sustainable and smart mobility, including factors such as de-icing in which TWI has a great deal of expertise.
Area 6: Farm to fork
Area 6 will work to test and demonstrate systemic innovations for sustainable food production from farm to fork.
Area 7: Ecosystems and biodiversity
This project area covers the restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Area 8: Zero-pollution, toxic-free environment
The final thematic area will seek to deliver innovative, non-polluting solutions to protect health, environment and natural resources from persistent and mobile chemicals. It will also foster regulatory science to address chemical and pharmaceutical mixtures from science through to evidence-based policies.
Area 9: Strengthening our knowledge in support of the EGD
This horizontal area will seek to find solutions to address the European Green Deal challenges via European Research Infrastructure capacity and services, develop end-user products and services in support of climate adaptation and mitigation, and create a digital twin of the ocean.
Area 10: Empowering citizens for the transition towards a climate-neutral, sustainable Europe
This area will improve the capacity for citizens to participate in the Green Deal, affect behavioural, social and cultural change and enable citizens to act on climate change and environmental protection through education, science, observation and civic involvement.
